TIPS AND TRICKS ON BEING A BETTER TOURNAMENT ANGLER .By Steven Mcgahan
1-Do your homework and practice/practice/practice !!! Nothing beats your OWN knowledge. If you can't get out to do some pre-fishing prior to a event chances are you won't do as well...
2-Keep as many secrets to YOURSELF as possible-Your fishing Location,The lure or lures your catching your best fish on,Your lure color,The water color your catching your fish in,Line size,The depth your catching your fish,The speed of your lure retrievel,All these are important FISH CATCHING factors especially in crowded tournament situations.
3-Like it or not doing well can be as simple as knowing someone who fishes that lake/river often, especially on larger bodies of water.YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH FRIENDS !!
4-One of my simplest tips is to keep your HOOKS SHARP !!!The difference between first and fifth can be and is usually a LOST fish...KEEP THOSE HOOKS SHARP.
5-I know All paterns are NOT the same , BUT try to run your trolling motor as slow as possible...You might start catching 7 or 8 in areas that might surprize you!!Bass school up more than you might think.....SLOW DOWN !!!
6-Ask yourself a few questions like, Time of year?Spring/summer/fall/winter all have something to do with a bass behavior!!!Does the lake have weeds? What type?Is there any web info available(tournament results/guide reports)? Is this your first time on this body of water or how you did last time you fished there(keep notes). How much weight does it usually take to win on that body of water your fishing(helps guage how your pre-fishing is doing)...If your catching 2 pounders and it usually takes 18-20 pounds to win an event you need to MAKE SOME CHANGES !!!
7-USED FISH ???? Thats right used fish..Areas very close to boat ramps that a PRIOR tournament has released all the bass caught from thier tournament .The bigger the tournament the more fish will be in the area and the fishing should be very good for a week or so.Some of the larger bodies of water have many boat ramps and finding local tournament information is not always easy,Use your computer for starters Federations ,Clubs , DEP often post tounament scheduals. So what im saying is a LOT of money has been WON fishing catch release areas of prior tournaments.
THIS IS A NEVER ENDING ARTICAL SO CHECK BACK OFTEN FOR UPDATES....
